Service to the college, university and community is part of the mission as is a clear commitment to student engagement including advisement. Faculty load is reduced based on grant-funded research activities. Teaching is significantly reduced for tenure-track faculty over the first five years for their scholarly development. Opportunities are available for faculty development and travel awards. Lehman College and CUNY internal funding is available through competitive grants for scholarship support.
Lehman College is the headquarters of the CUNY Institute for Health Equity (CIHE). The Institute addresses gaps in the health status of New York’s underserved ethnic/racial populations. Building on the working relationship that CUNY campuses have with surrounding communities as well as the academic resources of each college, the Institute’s work is to identify and address the social determinants of health that contribute to the high rates of morbidity and mortality among these populations. One of the goals of the CIHE is to facilitate and strengthen multidisciplinary cooperation and health equity research within the CUNY community and beyond.
